09/06/09 Psalm 23


Notes:

  1. Holiness - to be set apart from sin and separated from the ordinary activities of the world
    1. Ps 23: 5 - “You anoint my head with oil”
    2. Potential meanings:
      1. 1 Sam 16:12-13
      2. Luke 7:46
    3. God is Holy - Is 6:3
    4. He is Separated from sin
      1. Is 59:2
      2. Eph 4:18
      3. Jesus is the hero, brings us back to God
        1. 1 Pet 3:18
    5. He calls us to be holy
      1. 1 Pet 1:16
      2. 1 Pet 2:9
      3. Rom 12:2
  2. Righteousness (Justice) – God always acts in accordance with what is right.
    1. Ps 23:5 “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies”
    2. Does not award evil-doers but delights in those who do what is right
      1. 1 Cor 13:6
      2. Ps 11:7
      3. Ps 36:6
      4. Rom 8:29-30 — God glorifies those He has designated as righteous
  3. Jealousy - God is passionate to protect His own honor.
    1. God is love (1 John 4:8) and love is not jealous (1 Cor 13:4)
      1. Hebrew word “qin’ah” and greek word “zelos” both meaning “redness in the face that comes from emotion” – can be both a positive and negative emotion.  Examples of it used as a positive emotion:
        1. 1 Cor 12:31
        2. 2 Cor 11:2-4
    2. It is not wrong for God to seek his honor because it is due Him.  It is right for God to seek honor.
      1. Is 48:11
    3. Ps 23:3 - “He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake”
      1. Many secular people do good things…but to what end
      2. God has placed me where I am at to bring glory to Him– soli deo gloria
        1. Rom 11:36
      3. You can pray to God for victory in areas of your life…for His name’s sake
      4. View your life through the lens that you are constantly reflecting on your God
  4. Wrath - Anger of God towards sin expressed in vengeance towards sinners.
    1. Ps 23:5 - “Your rod and your staff they comfort me”
    2. A few places in the new Testament where we see God’s wrath”
      1. John 3:36
      2. 2 Thes 1:7-9
      3. In Romans (Rom 1:18, 2:5, 5:9, 12:19)
    3. God’s wrath is:
      1. Eternal
        1. Mark 3:29
        2. Rev 14:11
      2. Terrible
        1. Matt 13:41-42
      3. Deserved
        1. Rom 3:10-18
      4. Escapable
        1. Ps 23:6
        2. John 10:11
    4. David sees God’s wrath as a protection and comfort for him
      1. Ps 23:4 - “Your rod and your staff they comfort me
      2. No wrath on the sheep
      3. Rom 8:31, 37
  5. Love and Goodness - God only desires good for His children, all the time.
    1. Provides for us
      1. Ps 23:1 - “Lord is my Sheppard I shall not be in want
      2. Ps 23:5 - “My cup overflows”
      3. We will lack many things but we will overfull with the things He knows are good for us
        1. Ps 23:4
        2. Ps 84:11
        3. Phil 4:19
        4. Rom 8:28, 32
    2. Guides and leads us
      1. Ps 23:2 - “He makes me lie down in green pasture, he leads me beside quiet waters”
      2. Ps 23:4 - “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me”,
      3. Ps 23:4 - “Your rod and your staff they comfort me”
      4. Ps 23:3 - “He guides me in paths of righteousness”
      5. Two ways He guides us are through the Word and the Holy Spirit
        1. Ps 119:105
        2. Rom 12:2
        3. Gal 5
    3. Restores/refreshes us
      1. Ps 23:3 - “He restores my soul.”
        1. Is 40:31
        2. Is 57:15
      2. God gives peace to our hearts and minds
        1. Phil 4:6-7
  • There are many seasons in life and each have their own challenges
    • Good times provide temptation to place our trust and joy in gifts and not the giver
    • Dark valleys tempt us to question where God is and build up resentment or disbelief toward Him
  • God promises to be with us through all of these times
  • He promises everything that happens in Christians life is for your good and he has a plan for you
  • David ends the psalm show us the final destination to be with God himself
    • Ps 23:6 - “I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever”.
  • Jesus is our good Sheppard
